Shigellosis is a contagious infection of the intestines, which are the parts of your body that digest food and get rid of waste. It happens when you accidentally swallow the Shigella bacteria.
The bacteria are incredibly tough and sneaky. Once they get inside your digestive tract, they attack the lining of your colon, also known as your large intestine, causing inflammation and painful cramps.
