Amebiasis occurs when a tiny, single-celled parasite known as Entamoeba histolytica enters your digestive system. It primarily targets the colon, which is the long, tube-like part of your large intestine that processes waste.
The infection happens when you accidentally swallow the parasite, usually by eating or drinking something that has been contaminated with microscopic amounts of infected human waste. Once inside, the parasite can burrow into the lining of your intestines, which is why it can lead to more serious health issues if not treated correctly.
