Gonorrhea is caused by a specific germ called Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This bacteria thrives in warm, moist areas of the body, such as the urethra (the tube that carries pee out of the body), the rectum, the throat, or the cervix (the opening to the womb).
It is passed from person to person through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Because the bacteria cannot survive long outside the human body, it cannot be spread through casual contact like hugging, holding hands, or sharing toilet seats.
Common Symptoms
- A burning sensation when urinating.
- A discharge that looks like pus coming from the penis.
- Increased vaginal discharge or bleeding between periods.
- Pain or itching in the rectal area.
- A sore throat if the infection is in the throat.
