Genital herpes is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, which is commonly shortened to HSV. It affects the skin and mucous membranes, which are the moist linings of the body, specifically in the genital area, the buttocks, and the anus.
The virus enters the body through tiny breaks in the skin or through contact with moist skin linings during intimate contact. Once it enters, it stays in the body’s nerve cells, meaning it can become active from time to time, though many people with the virus may never have noticeable symptoms.
Common Symptoms
- Small red bumps, blisters, or open sores called ulcers in the genital or anal area.
- A tingling, itching, or burning sensation in the skin before sores appear.
