Filariasis is a tropical disease caused by microscopic, thread-like parasitic worms. These worms invade the lymphatic system, which is a network of vessels and nodes throughout your body that acts like a drainage system to keep your fluids balanced and your immune system working.
When these worms enter your body, they can block or damage the lymphatic vessels. Because the fluid cannot drain away properly, it builds up in your arms, legs, or other body parts, leading to noticeable and sometimes painful swelling.
