Malignant neoplasm of the cervix uteri is a condition where cells in the cervix begin to grow out of control, forming a tumor. The cervix is the bottom part of the uterus, or womb, that connects to the birth canal. When these cells change and turn cancerous, they can eventually spread to other parts of the body if not treated.
Most of these cancers are caused by a very common virus called HPV (Human Papillomavirus). When your immune system cannot clear the virus, it can cause the cells on the surface of the cervix to change over several years, eventually leading to cancer.
Common Symptoms
- Vaginal bleeding that occurs between regular periods, after sexual intercourse, or after menopause.
- Unusual vaginal discharge that may be watery, bloody, or have a strong odor.
- Pain or pressure in the pelvic area, which is the lower part of your belly between your hip bones.
