Rhinitis refers to irritation and swelling of the mucous membrane, which is the soft, wet lining inside your nose. When this lining becomes inflamed, it produces extra mucus and blocks your nasal passages, making it difficult to breathe comfortably through your nose.
This condition usually happens because your nose reacts too strongly to things in the air. In allergic rhinitis, your immune system overreacts to harmless particles like pollen or pet dander. In vasomotor rhinitis, your nose reacts to physical triggers like cold air, strong smells, or spicy food, causing the blood vessels inside your nose to widen and swell up.
Common Symptoms
- Sneezing fits, often happening in quick succession.
- A runny or drippy nose with clear, watery fluid.
- Nasal congestion, where your nose feels stuffed up or blocked.
- Post-nasal drip, which is the feeling of mucus trickling down the back of your throat.
- Itchy nose, eyes, or roof of your mouth.
