Other chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a condition that happens when your lungs become inflamed or damaged. This damage makes the tiny tubes inside your lungs, called bronchi, narrow, which traps air and makes it feel like you cannot catch your breath.
The primary parts of the body involved are the bronchial tubes, which are the main pipes that carry air into your lungs, and the tiny air sacs at the end of those pipes. When these areas are damaged, your lungs lose their ability to stretch and recoil like a healthy rubber band, making breathing a constant effort.
Common Symptoms
- A persistent cough that often produces mucus or phlegm.
- Feeling short of breath, especially when you are physically active.
- A wheezing sound when you breathe.
- Feeling tightness or pressure in your chest.
- Frequent chest colds or respiratory infections.
