Your lungs contain airways called bronchi, which are tube-like structures that carry air in and out. In people with bronchiectasis, these tubes become wider than they should be, leading to a cycle of damage and scarring.
Because these tubes are stretched and scarred, they lose their natural ability to clear out mucus, which is the sticky liquid produced by your lungs. When this mucus stays trapped, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, which leads to frequent, painful lung infections.
