Stomatitis refers to any irritation or inflammation of the mucous membranes, which are the soft, moist linings inside your mouth. When you have this condition, you might notice redness, swelling, or small painful ulcers, commonly known as canker sores, appearing on the insides of your cheeks, your gums, or your tongue.
This happens because the sensitive lining of your mouth has been triggered by an injury, an infection, or a reaction within your immune system. While it can be very distracting and make eating or talking feel uncomfortable, it is usually a localized problem that does not spread throughout the rest of your body.
Common Symptoms
- Small, round, white or yellowish sores with a red border.
- A burning or tingling sensation in the mouth before sores appear.
- Swollen, red, or tender gums.
- Pain when chewing, swallowing, or talking.
- Slight fever, especially in cases related to viral infections.
