Your neck, known medically as the cervical spine, is made up of seven small bones stacked on top of each other. Between these bones are round, rubbery discs that act as shock absorbers to help your neck bend and twist. When these discs become worn down, dry out, or push out of their normal space, it is called a cervical disc disorder.
This happens because the discs lose their water content over time or get damaged, which can cause them to rub against or pinch the delicate nerves that travel from your neck down into your arms and hands.
Common Symptoms
- Stiff neck that makes it hard to turn your head.
- Sharp or dull pain in the neck or shoulder blades.
- Numbness or a 'pins and needles' tingling sensation in your arms or fingers.
