Cystitis is the medical term for inflammation of the bladder. Your bladder is a hollow, balloon-shaped organ located in your lower belly that holds pee. When the lining of this organ becomes irritated or swollen, it causes a condition called cystitis.
This usually happens when bacteria from outside the body enter the bladder through the tube used to pee, known as the urethra. Once inside, these germs multiply and irritate the bladder wall, leading to that uncomfortable feeling that you constantly need to use the bathroom.
Common Symptoms
- A strong, persistent urge to pee.
- A burning sensation or stinging feeling when you pee.
- Passing frequent, small amounts of urine.
- Blood in your urine, which may look pink or red.
- Cloudy or strong-smelling urine.
