Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection that affects the upper female reproductive system, including the uterus (the womb), the fallopian tubes (the tubes that carry eggs to the womb), and the ovaries. It happens when bacteria, often from a sexually transmitted infection, move from the vagina into these reproductive organs.
When these areas become infected, they can become swollen and irritated. Because these organs are located deep in the pelvic area, this infection can cause significant pain and, if left alone, can lead to more serious long-term health issues by causing scarring in those delicate tissues.
