Giardiasis is an infection of your small intestine, which is the long tube-like organ in your belly that helps you digest food and absorb nutrients. It is caused by a tiny parasite called Giardia lamblia that attaches itself to the lining of your gut and interferes with how your body processes food.
The parasite lives in the stool of infected people or animals. It can survive in the environment for a long time in the form of a cyst, which is a tough, protective shell that helps the parasite stay alive in water or on surfaces until it is accidentally swallowed by someone else.
