Anogenital herpes is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). It affects the skin and mucous membranes (the moist, inner lining) of the genital and anal regions, which includes the penis, scrotum, vulva, vagina, and the skin around the anus.
The virus is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity. Once a person is exposed, the virus stays in the body in a dormant, or resting, state within the nerves and can occasionally wake up to cause visible sores or symptoms.
Common Symptoms
- Small, red bumps, blisters, or open sores in the genital or anal area.
- Itching, tingling, or burning sensations before the sores appear.
- Pain when urinating if urine touches the open sores.
- Flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache, or swollen lymph nodes in the groin area.
