Candidiasis is a skin infection caused by a yeast called Candida. While this yeast naturally lives on everyone's skin without causing harm, it can overgrow and lead to an infection when the environment becomes consistently warm and damp.
This condition most often appears in body folds, such as the armpits, groin, or under the breasts. It can also affect the fingernails or toenails, causing them to become thickened, brittle, or discolored as the fungus feeds on the nail material.
Common Symptoms
- A bright red, itchy rash that may have small red bumps or pimples around the edges.
- Burning or soreness in the areas where skin rubs together.
- Nails that look yellow, white, or brown and may become thick or crumbly.
- Separation of the nail from the skin underneath, often starting at the tip or sides.
- A noticeable buildup of debris under the nail, which may have a slight odor.
