Your wrist has a narrow passageway made of bones and ligaments (tough bands of tissue) called the carpal tunnel. Inside this tunnel runs the median nerve, which provides feeling to your thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers.
When the tissues around the median nerve swell or the tunnel becomes too narrow, the nerve gets pinched. This pressure disrupts the signals traveling to your hand, leading to the sensations of pins-and-needles or pain that many people experience.
Common Symptoms
- Numbness or a tingling sensation in your thumb and fingers.
- A feeling of electric shocks that travel from your wrist up into your fingers.
- Weakness in your hand that makes you drop objects.
- Tingling that gets worse at night, sometimes waking you from sleep.
