Labyrinthitis happens when the labyrinth, a tiny maze-like structure deep inside your inner ear, becomes swollen or inflamed (red and irritated). This tiny structure is filled with fluid and is responsible for both hearing and helping your body keep its balance.
When this area gets inflamed, it sends confusing signals to your brain about where your body is in space, which makes the world feel like it is spinning. This usually happens after your body has been fighting off a common cold or a viral infection elsewhere in your system.
Common Symptoms
- A sensation that you or your surroundings are spinning, known as vertigo.
- Feeling unsteady on your feet or as if you might fall over.
- Nausea or feeling like you need to throw up.
- Temporary hearing loss or a ringing sound in the ear called tinnitus.
