Tinnitus is essentially a glitch in your auditory system, which includes your ears and the part of your brain that processes sound. Even though it feels like the sound is coming from inside your ears, it is often actually caused by your brain trying to fill in the gaps when it stops receiving certain sounds from your inner ear.
Think of it like a static sound on a radio when the signal is weak. When your ears cannot pick up sounds as clearly as they used to, your brain sometimes creates its own noise to compensate. It is very common and usually not a sign of a serious medical emergency, but it can be annoying.
Common Symptoms
- Hearing a ringing, buzzing, roaring, clicking, or hissing sound.
- The sound may be high-pitched or low-pitched.
- You might hear the noise in one ear, both ears, or even inside your head.
- The sound might be constant or it might come and go.
