Raynaud's syndrome is a disorder that causes the small blood vessels in your fingers and toes to overreact to cold or stress. When these vessels narrow too much, they restrict the flow of blood to your extremities, which are the parts of your body furthest from your heart, like your fingertips and toe tips.
While it might look frightening, most people find it manageable once they understand what triggers their symptoms. It is essentially like a temporary "traffic jam" in your blood vessels that prevents warm, oxygen-rich blood from reaching your skin.
Common Symptoms
- Your fingers or toes turn white as blood flow is cut off.
- The affected areas then turn blue as they lose oxygen.
- The skin becomes red and may throb or tingle once blood flow returns.
- Numbness or a cold sensation in the fingers or toes.
