Low back pain affects the lumbar spine, which is the lower part of your back made up of five large, stackable bones called vertebrae. These bones are cushioned by round, rubbery discs that act like shock absorbers when you move.
The pain happens when the muscles, ligaments (the tough bands of tissue that connect bones to bones), or the discs in this area become strained, irritated, or compressed. Most often, it occurs because of the physical stress we put on our bodies during daily activities, but it can also be triggered by sudden movements.
Common Symptoms
- A dull, aching sensation in the lower back.
- Sharp, shooting pain that may travel down one or both legs.
- Stiffness or difficulty standing up straight after sitting for a long time.
- Muscle spasms, which are painful and involuntary tightenings of the back muscles.
