The prostate is a small, walnut-sized gland that is part of the male reproductive system. It sits just below the bladder and produces the fluid that helps carry sperm. When this gland becomes suddenly infected, usually by bacteria, we call it acute prostatitis.
This condition causes intense swelling and irritation. Because the prostate surrounds the tube that carries urine out of the body, the swelling often makes it very difficult or painful to pee. While it can be quite frightening because the symptoms come on so quickly, it is very treatable with the right medicine.
Common Symptoms
- A strong, frequent urge to pee, even when your bladder is empty.
- Pain or a burning sensation when you urinate.
- Pain in the lower back, groin, or the area between the scrotum and anus.
- Flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, and body aches.
- Cloudy or blood-tinged urine.
