When you are pregnant, your body produces hormones to help your baby grow, but these same hormones can block your insulin—the natural chemical your body uses to turn sugar into energy. This causes sugar to build up in your bloodstream instead of fueling your cells.
While your pancreas (an organ behind your stomach) usually makes extra insulin to keep up, sometimes it cannot keep pace with the needs of pregnancy. This state is called gestational diabetes, and it typically goes away on its own once the baby is born.
Common Symptoms
